The New Record by My Bloody Valentine marks the point at which the band started to experiment with pop music and noise; the buzz saw/ ’60s pop sound on most of its tracks reveal strong influence from the Jesus and Mary Chain. It’s a vital point in the development of their sound, falling before the addition of Bilinda Butcher during the Ecstasy and Wine period, but making a clean break from the Cramps and Birthday Party-inspired darkness of their early work. Think of the Jesus and Mary Chain‘s Psychocandy noise meeting the pop tunes of the Primitives, anchored by the campy vocals of Dave Conway, and there you have it. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, AMG
